Event History

The Vail based nonprofit, the Vail Valley Foundation created the Honda Session in 2003. The concept for this cutting edge snowboard event was to push snowboard riding to new levels by having two of the highest quality events in the world, the “Steel & Sky Rails” competition for men and women, along with the men’s Slopestyle event.

The Honda Session is a platform for the most progressive and innovative features ever found in a snowboard competition that allows riders to progress to the next level by giving them a superior competitive environment in which to excel and showcase one of a kind, never done before tricks. The Session courses are designed to be the leader in creative and innovative snowboard park and rail design coupled with competitive formats that allow the riders multiple opportunities to display their talent.

Highlighted by some of the largest and most innovative prize money payouts in the world, the Honda Session has consistently listened to the riders and the snowboard industry since its inception, most recently providing key industry leaders the opportunity to select a large portion of the Honda Session’s competition field for 06, 07 and 08.

Held under the lights at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak, the Honda Session has developed a tremendous spectator base, with an extremely viewer-friendly venue and the trademark flame that signals each 15-minute prize money payout for the Steel & Sky Rails competition and outstanding performances in the Slopestyle event.

Spectators can also experience the Honda Base Camp, an interactive village set at the base of the competition venue, featuring games, displays, video screens and concessions.

In addition to the professional competition element, the Honda Session also features the Sunday Session free clinic for those riders looking to improve their skills and then a public rails competition for riders of all ages and abilities.

The Honda Session is proud to have played a role in setting the bar higher in both the organization of a snowboard competition and in creating a fun, creative and state of the art venue for riders to excel.
